Sascha + Kathrin | Secret Proposal on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York

This blog post is long overdue and I have been looking forward to share this session with you for such a long time. In a nutshell, it’s a love story. The love story of Sascha and Kathrin. It was November 20, 2012 when I received an email from Sascha with the subject line: “I hope you are the right one…” In the email he described how much in love he is with Kathrin and that he would like to propose to her during their upcoming New York vacation. I loved the idea of photographing a secret proposal and so Sascha and I started planing. We talked about location, timing, date, how we will recognize each other, and other fun details. We set the date for January 13, 2013. And as January days in New York go, especially when you are in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge, it was freezing. But nothing could stop the plan now. The question was, would I recognize Sascha and Kathrin who I never had met before? I only knew them from photos. However, at the agreed time I saw them walking up the bridge. No question about it that it was them. They were cuddled into each other and in their own world. I was in position and ready to go. I feared , however, that I needed to be very fast as Germans (and please forgive me here but as German myself I think I am allowed to say that) have the reputation of  being less affectionate. But what happened next might have been the best reaction to a proposal I have ever witnessed. And – on a related note – shatters the reputation of my fellow Germans. :) Grab some tissues and enjoy…

And this is the moment when Sascha told Kathrin that there is actually a photographer (me!) who had just captured the entire proposal. One surprise after the other.

Next was the important phone call home.

Sascha and Kathrin got married on June 13, 2013 in Germany. After their proposal we did an engagement session at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. I will share photos of that fun shoot in a separate blog post.

Okay, I need a FAVOR… a BIG one!!

Next year the World Cup will be held right here in the U.S. 8 games will be played in front of my house at MetLife Stadium.

Here’s the thing: this week only, the lottery opened for World Cup tickets. You can register for free to maybe get the chance to buy tickets. The lottery will close this Friday (October 31). The odds are long…like “hole-in-one in a hurricane” long.

So, dear friends, family...past and future couples, if you are not planning to go to the World Cup, I have one humble request:

👉 Please throw your name into the lottery for me. https://www.fifa.com

It costs nothing to register, and if by some miracle you get selected, I’ll 100% pay for the tickets (no questions asked, no money out of your pocket).

I’ve photographed over 1,200 weddings…I’ve climbed rooftops and bridges, and made small miracles happen…but I’ve never seen a World Cup game in my life. And next year, it’s happening 10 minutes from my house!

So, help a soccer-obsessed photographer live his dream. ⚽️

Put your name in the hat, and maybe together we can beat the odds! But remember, the lottery will close this Friday (October 31). So no time to waste!

(DM me if you register and I’ll send good karma and eternal gratitude your way.)

20 years!!
7,305 days.
175,320 hours.
10,519,200 minutes.
And around 631 million seconds of putting up with each other.

Today, exactly 20 years ago, I married my best friend. And I had no idea what the next 20 years would bring.

I love Jackie more today than ever. Which says a lot, because I already liked her quite a bit before. She is my best friend, my business partner, my favorite person to do absolutely nothing with, and somehow the only human alive who can handle my grumpy moods. No really, that alone should win her an award or something.

When we met, I was still an architect and Jackie was a musical theater actor. Neither of us could have imagined that 20 years later we would be running our own wedding business together, celebrating love for a living, and helping over 1,200 couples create their own love stories.

We literally spend all our time together. Business, travel, life...and I still wake up every day wanting more of it. That is either true love or early signs of insanity. Probably both.

And to think it all started when I walked down the stairs at Bethesda Terrace and saw her sitting by the fountain…in those ugly pink pants. (Yes, they were that bad. Whole nother story. Ask me about it sometime.)

Twenty years later, we have built this wild, beautiful, unpredictable life together. There have been plot twists, bad haircuts, flight delays, lost luggage, and a whole lot of laughter. And I would not trade a single second of it.

Here is to the next 20 years of chaos, love, and whatever else we get ourselves into. ❤️

If you made it to the end of this post, tell us how we know and met you. Because guess what…you are part of our story too. And we want to hear about it. Thank you for being an integral part of Team Reinking.

Couples always ask me what happens if it rains on their wedding day. And my answer always is: “Then we will have fun in the rain!!”. 🥰

We got paired with these two at our 6:54 AM tee time this morning @gallopinghillgolfcourse and right before we teed off, they mentioned they might stop to snap a quick photo for their pregnancy announcement.

Well, what are the odds they got paired with a photographer? So in between bogeys and lost balls, we knocked out an impromptu mini photo shoot. First time for everything, and golf magic at its finest.

Easily the best scorecard moment of the day. 😂
