Notable guests include writers Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, and Arthur Miller; musicians Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin; and artists Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe. The hotelā€™s famed staircase has been a backdrop for many, including Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe during their residence in 1969.
