10 Tips How to Prepare for Your NYC Wedding Photo Session (+ 2 Bonus Tips)

With over 1,000 elopements and mini weddings photographed in New York, I’ve noticed that couples often have the same questions before their photo session. Whether you’re planning an intimate NYC elopement or a small wedding, certain things always come up.

That’s why I’ve put together for you: "10 Tips How to Prepare for Your NYC Wedding Photo Session" - a guide to help you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to enjoy every moment.

From what to wear to navigating the city, these New York wedding photo tips will make sure your session is smooth, fun, and stress-free while we capture your love story in the most authentic way possible.

1. What should we do with our personal items during the photo session?

Carrying too much can be a hassle during your session, so it’s best to keep things light and simple. But don’t worry - I would never ask you to part with your phone entirely. I know that’s basically like cutting off your pinkie!

Keep it minimal:

  • Bring one small bag or backpack for essentials like your phone, lipstick, a change of shoes, and keys.
  • Limit it to just one bag - multiple bags will get in the way and slow us down.

Where do we put the bag?

  • During portraits, I’ll hold onto it for you, or if it’s small enough, you can tuck your items into my backpack.
  • If you have a friend or witness joining, they can carry any extras.

Style matters!

  • If possible, opt for a stylish bag - since I’ll be snapping photos while we walk between locations, a bright neon tote or that old, beat-up backpack from college might not be your best friend in the background!

Pro Tip: The less you carry, the more natural and carefree your photos will feel!

2. What kind of shoes should we wear?

New York City is no place for suffering in uncomfortable shoes - trust me, I’ve seen too many people regretting their footwear choices halfway through a session! Between cobblestone streets, subway stairs, and lots of walking, comfort is key.

Our advice:

  • Bring a backup pair of comfy shoes (sneakers, flats, or boots) and swap into your stylish shoes when needed.
  • Consider the season - closed-toe shoes for winter, breathable styles for summer.
  • Think about how easy it is to switch between your stylish shoes and comfy flats. Lots of straps and buckles can slow us down - something easy to slip on and off will keep things moving!
  • While this tip is mostly geared toward brides, grooms should also choose comfortable shoes - you’ll be walking just as much!
  • But also - if you’re in love with your shoes, wear them! If your dream wedding shoes demand a little extra time, we’ll take it. This is your day, and we’ll make it work.

Pro Tip: No one wants to hobble through Central Park or DUMBO in pain. Comfy shoes = more fun, better photos, and an overall smoother NYC elopement experience! And if you do get a blister? No worries - I always carry blister band-aids just in case.

3. How should we handle transportation to photo locations?

Ways to get around:

  • Uber/Lyft: Convenient, and in a city like New York, a ride is usually never more than 2-3 minutes away. Just keep in mind that traffic can be unpredictable.
  • Yellow cabs: A true NYC experience! Easy to hail, especially in Manhattan, and no app needed.
  • The subway: If you're up for it, the subway can be a fun, iconic backdrop and often the fastest way to beat traffic.
  • Private car service: If we’re hitting multiple locations, a private car can be a practical way to keep things efficient. It also helps cut down on walking, keeps you warm in the winter, and gives you a chance to cool down in the summer. Need a recommendation? Just ask! We work with the best.
  • Checker Cab experience: Want something truly special? My friend Peter owns an iconic Checker Cab, the same kind you’ve seen in movies like Home Alone 2, When Harry Met Sally, and Men in Black. Not only is it a nostalgic way to cruise through the city, but it also makes for an incredible photo prop - people absolutely love seeing it drive through New York!

Timing is everything!

  • Always plan extra time - NYC traffic, subway delays, and even finding a cab can take longer than expected, especially during rush hour.
  • If we’re moving between locations, we’ll strategize the best route to keep things stress-free.

Pro Tip: Want a true NYC moment? A subway ride, yellow cab, or Checker Cab photo can add an extra touch of city magic to your gallery!

4. What should I do with my jacket if I don’t want to wear it during the photo session?

I get it - when the weather gets cooler, you want to stay warm. But sometimes, you don’t want your jacket in every photo. No worries! There are a few easy ways to keep it out of the way without it feeling like a burden.

Options for your jacket:

  • Most of the time, I’ll hold onto your jacket and keep an eye on it. I might drape it over my backpack or find a nearby bench to set it down.
  • If you have a friend or witness tagging along, they can carry it for you between locations.

Winter elopement? Consider stylish layering!

  • If it’s too cold to take your jacket off (New York winters can be pretty brutal!), make sure to choose a stylish jacket, stole, or scarf that complements your outfit - trust me, nothing sticks out more in wedding photos than an old, clunky winter coat.
  • If you want to stay warm without a heavy coat in every shot, consider layering with a chic wrap, scarf, or fitted blazer that blends seamlessly with your wedding look.

Pro Tip: Jackets can actually make for great photo moments - think of a cozy embrace wrapped in a coat together or a cool, over-the-shoulder look. If you bring it, we’ll find ways to make it work!

5. What’s the best time for our photo session?

This is probably the most-asked question - and for good reason! As a photographer, I’ll always suggest the time of day with the best light because great lighting makes all the difference. That doesn’t mean other times won’t work, but from a purely photographic standpoint, some times are definitely better than others.

Wintertime (November to February):

  • The time of day isn’t as critical since the sun stays low in the sky all day, giving us that nice, soft, flattering light.
  • The bigger concern in winter? The temperature. You don’t want to start too early or too late when it’s freezing outside!
  • Make sure to stay within daylight hours - winter days in NYC are short, and once the sun sets, it gets cold fast.

Spring to Fall (March to October):

  • Here, the time of day matters a lot more because the sun gets much higher in the sky.
  • Midday sun = harsh light, high contrast, sweaty foreheads, melting makeup, and unflattering shadows under your eyes and nose. Not ideal!
  • The magic happens when the sun is lower in the sky, which means early morning or late afternoon/evening sessions are best.

Quick Scheduling Tips:

  • Golden Hour (sunrise or sunset): The softest, dreamiest light and fewer crowds.
  • Morning: The best time for popular spots like Central Park, DUMBO, and the Brooklyn Bridge before the tourists arrive.
  • Evening: If you love the idea of city lights and a nighttime NYC vibe, evening sessions can be incredible - especially in Times Square.

So, when planning your wedding day timeline, keep these factors in mind! If you’re unsure, I’ll happily help you choose the perfect time for your session based on your vision and locations.

6. What happens if it rains or snows?

Well, then we’ll have fun in the rain or snow - embrace it! NYC is absolutely gorgeous when the weather takes a romantic turn, and some of the most stunning wedding photos happen when couples go with the flow (literally).

Why rain & snow can be amazing:

  • Rain turns the streets into reflective mirrors, making city lights and colors pop.
  • Snowfall adds a magical, storybook feel - think soft flakes swirling around you in Central Park or a snowy Brooklyn Bridge moment.
  • Puddles? They're not just obstacles, they're photo gold! Perfect for dreamy reflection shots.

Umbrella Pro-Tip:

  • Bring a clear or white umbrella - these look romantic and let the light shine through.
  • Avoid black umbrellas (they block light) or bright colors (they cast weird hues on your face).

Indoor Options for Rainy Days

If the weather isn’t cooperating, we can mix it up and head to some of NYC’s amazing indoor locations! Grand Central, Chelsea Market, or even certain museums offer incredible backdrops while keeping you warm and dry.

What if the weather is really bad?

If it’s just a light drizzle or gentle snowfall, we’ll roll with it and create something beautiful. But if we’re dealing with horizontal rain, extreme winds, or three feet of snow, we have options! We can adjust the timing or even reschedule the shoot if needed. So far, we’ve managed to photograph every couple - whatever the weather throws at us, we always find a solution.

Bottom line: Rain and snow aren’t problems - they’re opportunities for unique, breathtaking wedding photos. And no matter what, we’ll make sure you get incredible images!

7. What wedding attire is a good choice for New York?

First things first - the most important rule: Wear what makes you happy! That could be a $10,000 designer wedding dress (done that) or a pink jumpsuit (done that too). It’s your day. Your outfit should reflect you!

Some things to consider:

  • Season & Temperature: Make sure to dress or layer appropriately. NYC winters can be freezing, and summers can be hot and humid, so plan accordingly.
  • Mobility & Comfort: NYC means walking - a lot - so make sure you can move comfortably in whatever you wear.
  • Style & Vibe:
    • Flowy gowns look stunning and create amazing movement in photos.
    • Jumpsuits & short dresses are perfect for a city-chic vibe and make navigating NYC streets easier.
    • Dramatic trains & long veils? They look amazing - but just keep in mind they’ll be interacting with NYC sidewalks, subway stations, and cobblestone streets.

Your dress will "meet" New York - embrace it!

If your dress touches the ground, it will pick up some "NYC energy" (a.k.a. dirt) - and that’s totally OK! Consider it a badge of honor for getting married in the greatest city in the world. Just note that in the rain, a long dress will get wet and a bit dirtier - but that can be part of your story.

Bonus: Shorter hemlines are a great option for NYC elopements - they give you freedom to move, dance, and explore the city streets without worrying about tripping or dragging fabric everywhere.

8. Do we pick the photo locations, or will you?

It’s a team effort! Some couples come in with a very specific vision, while others have no preference at all and let me handle the locations. Either way, we’ll create a plan that fits your style and makes the most of our time together.

How to choose locations:

  • If you already have places in mind, great! Let’s make it happen.
  • If you’re unsure, try describing the feeling you want your wedding photos to capture rather than just specific locations.
  • “Romantic and green” → Central Park, The High Line, or a charming hidden garden.
  • “Loud and fast” → Times Square, Midtown, or the buzz of a busy avenue.
  • “Classic NYC” → Yellow cabs, food carts, and brownstone-lined streets.
  • “Skyline views” → Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO, or rooftop spots with a breathtaking city backdrop.

How many locations can we do?

We can cover as many spots as time allows, but keep in mind - time flies! It’s easy to get overly excited with a long location wishlist, and the more time we spend moving, the less time we have for actual photos.

Don’t worry, though - that’s where I come in! I’ll help plan, guide, and adjust so we maximize your session and capture everything that matters most to you.

Bottom line: Whether you have a set plan or no idea where to start, I’ve got you. We’ll create a route that fits your vision, the time we have, and (most importantly) makes for amazing photos!

9. We’ve never been professionally photographed before. How does that work?

No Posing Allowed!

First of all - you’re not alone! Almost every couple I photograph has never been professionally photographed before. 99% of my couples are in the exact same boat. That’s why one of the most important parts of this process is trust - and trust me, I got you.

How does it work?

  • I’ll guide you every step of the way and create moments that feel natural and comfortable - nothing forced, nothing awkward.
  • If you’ve seen my photos, you might notice that couples rarely look directly into the camera. That’s intentional!
    • Looking at me breaks the connection you have with each other - I want the focus to be on you, not me.
    • My goal is to make your photos feel like I wasn’t even there - as if someone just peeked into your moment and captured something real.

What’s my style?

  • No stiff, awkward posing or forced smiles.
  • Just genuine, joyful moments that actually feel like you.

Almost every couple tells me afterward how comfortable they felt. And if you feel comfortable, it shows in the photos! That’s the goal - to make this experience effortless and fun, so you can simply enjoy the moment while I capture it.

10. Should we have a friend or helper come along?

It’s totally up to you! Some couples love having a friend or two there for support, while others prefer to keep it just the two of them.

Pros:

  • They can hold your jackets, bags, or even a celebratory drink so you don’t have to worry about them.
  • Friends can be a source of comfort and hype you up, which can be great if you’re feeling a little nervous.
  • If you’re eloping and need a witness, having a friend tag along can be a practical choice. (Although, I'm always happy to jump in as your witness as well.)

Cons:

  • Too many voices and opinions can be distracting, making it harder for you to stay in the moment.
  • If an entire wedding party tags along, it can slow us down - especially when moving between locations.
  • Friends sometimes accidentally stand in the background of shots, which means extra work avoiding them in photos.
  • And let’s be honest - sometimes friends are just too funny and make you laugh so much that we spend half the session cracking up instead of shooting! (Okay, maybe that’s not really a con.)

Bottom line: If having a friend there will make you feel more relaxed, go for it! But it’s definitely not necessary for the success of the session - in fact, keeping it simple often helps create the most intimate and natural moments.

BONUS TIPS #1

Can we include our pet in the photos?

Absolutely! Pets are family members and add so much personality and charm to your session - so if you’re local, bring them along! If you’re traveling from overseas, it might be a bit trickier (unless your pet is really good at paperwork).

Things to consider:

  • Bring a friend or helper to handle your pet between shots or take them home early if needed.
  • NYC is full of pet-friendly spots - Central Park is a classic choice, but we can find other great locations depending on your pet’s personality!

BONUS TIPS #2

How do we deal with tourists or crowds at popular NYC spots?

New York is an amazing, vibrant city, and that means…people. Lots of people. But don’t worry - there are ways to work around (or even with) the crowds!

Timing is everything:

  • Early mornings are best for popular spots like DUMBO, Central Park, or Times Square before the city wakes up.

Go off the beaten path:

  • NYC has plenty of hidden gems without the crowds - we know all the best spots for an intimate feel.

Embrace it!

  • It’s New York! There are 8 million people here, and at least a few of them will want to be part of your day - whether that’s cheering you on or photobombing your first kiss.
  • That’s part of the magic of NYC - you came here for the energy, the hustle, the buzz. So take it all in, and enjoy the moment!
  • And don’t be surprised if you hear random strangers shouting, "Congratulations!" all day long. You’re about to feel like celebrities, and trust us - you’re going to love it!

Bottom line: Whether you want a quiet, intimate session or full-on NYC energy, we’ll make it work. We know all the best tricks for a smooth and unforgettable NYC elopement photo session!

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you enjoy the moment - because that’s what makes the best photos. You’re in expert hands, and we’ll be there to guide you every step of the way - from choosing the perfect locations to making sure you feel completely at ease in front of the camera.

No stress. No stiff poses. Just genuine, joyful moments captured in the greatest city in the world.

So if you’re dreaming of getting married in New York and want stunning, stress-free photos, we’d love to capture your love story! Reach out, and let’s make some NYC magic happen.

Happy Valentine’s Day my wife, my rock, and the heart of our family. 💕

I still love her 85 times to the moon and back. She’s the calm when things get chaotic, the one who sees the good in every situation, and the glue that holds us all together. Her laugh can brighten any day, and her support is the kind of magic you don’t take for granted.

I love our trips to the Baltic Sea, our Disney adventures, and the simple, everyday moments that make life with her so special. She’s my business partner, the love of my life, and my best friend - and I’m endlessly grateful for her, for us, and for the life we’ve built together.

This October, we’ll celebrate 20 years of marriage, and I swear I love her more with every passing year. ❤️

And, fun fact: our daughter took this photo. The talent clearly runs in the family. 😉📸
